General Information

Ms. Lowe - Art

I can be reached via phone before and after school, and sometimes at lunch. My extension is #46. If you get into the answering system please leave me a message. I travel between schools every two weeks typically and this makes it difficult to check voice mails frequently. Please be patient and I will do my best to call you back as soon as possible! It is best to reach me via e-mail. You can send me an e-mail by clicking the small envelope next to my name below:

Classroom Management

High Five Class Assessment: At the end of each art class, students self rate the class on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being the highest. The classes that receive the most points each quarter earn a special prize.

The Penalty Box: This is for individual students who are disrupting the learning of the group. They receive one warning. After the first warning, they get their name on the board. If they disrupt learning in the same day, they lose lunch recess time and call home. If they disrupt learning 3 times in a week, they will lose recess and call home (2nd-6th grade only). Kindergarten and first is a day to day basis (3 strikes per class) unless the behavior is continually problematic, then I will call home.

Safe environment policy: I have zero tolerance for certain behaviors: violence or injuring another student, foul language, defiance (arguing with the teacher), name calling, and destroying school property or the work of others. These actions will result in a call home and sometimes an immediate visit with the principal. This is to ensure a safe and secure environment for all children to learn and create!

Grades and Report Cards

My grading philosophy is based on the participation, behavior and effort of the individual child. Art is a personal journey and we all perform at different levels and abilities. Quality craftsmanship and best effort along with respectful behavior will earn high grades. I grade the student at his or her ability level. I will be keeping a portfolio of student work to show an overall progress of learning (and of course all work will come home to you at the end of the school year!).

On the report cards, I will give out mostly 3s which means the students are meeting my expectations. I will give a few 4s to those who are really excelling and 2s and 1s to those who need to improve. I feel that if everyone gets a 4 on a report card, then my expectations are too low. Meeting the expectations of the class and earning a 3 means students are working hard and doing well!
